Our journey started on Sunday for all of us. After our respective arrival in our accomodations, we met at 7.00pm at Izumi, a Japanese restaurant.

Monday, 18.03.2024

At 8.15am, we took the underground to go to school. After a brief presentation of the program of the week and of the projects that students must realize (the realisation of two lamps: a hanging lamp, and a table lamp), people introduced themselves. Then, we had a presentation of the different parts of the woodworking department of NEXT Uddannelse København school. Erik and Arek (the two Danish coordinators) presented us the CNC hand router, called Shapertool: how it works, the safety rules (how to change the router bit properly for example), the different projects you can find on SHAPER HUB on the website of the company. In the afternoon, in order to get used to this new digital tool, students worked by pairs and selected a project from the database so as to train and adapt to the tool. Every student looked quite excited and involved into their work. At 3.30pm, after cleaning the workshop, everybody left the workshop in Norrebro.

Tuesday, 19.03.2024

Our day started with a computer presentation:  Erik showed how to import/download/upload SolidWorks projects to Teams. He took the example of the Ping Pong bat. Then, he explained us the use and the safety regulations of different machines in the two workshops and in the cellar and where other workshops are,if students want to go to make their lamps. The school has organized a number of 8 machines and it was decided that students would start with the creation of their respective plate representing the group number and their names. After this, each group (teams with 2 students) started with the hanging lamp. Another team of students and teachers started with producing a video screenplay for training the Shapertool machine.

This lamp is composed of 24 vertical connect rack joint wings and 2 central rings. First of all, to prepare the project, you need to choose 4 mm plywood planks to mill the 24 wings. In order to make it, students scan the plans from the CNC hand router database, to the digital screen. To realise the two rings, this is the same process of scanning. Students use 8-mm-poplar plywood planks (poplar is a soft wood). After the cutting of each piece, you must sand the pieces with sandpaper before assembling them together in the rings. At 4.00pm, after cleaning the workshop, we left school for free time. At 7.00pm we met in Spiseloppen restaurant where they serve great food in really nice surroundings, in Christiania.

Wednesday, 20.03.2024

We started school at 9.00am and some groups had to finish the first lamp project before wiring, while other pairs of students were working on the Ping Pong Bat with the digital hand router. After having cut every part of it, they sanded it before assembling each part. At 11 a.m. the group of students went to the computer room in order to get the information for the realisation of the second project: the table lamp. Arek explained the Alphacam software for programming the school's CNC machine and the trainees practiced programming on the laptops individually. Arek focused on the different and challenging parts of the project, especially how to cope with the stability of the foot, with the realisation of one part of the lamp with the 3D printer. It was decided that every group would rotate and would change their respective pair. First of all, before starting the project, the students had to watch the Solid Works tutorials so as to draw each part of their project: the lamp base, the vertical stub, and the lamp tray. Then, each drawing was imported into the digital program of the hand router. To gain time, a group of students was preparing several lamp bases, vertical stubs and lamp trays. After this process, they started milling the base. At 4.00 p.m. we stopped working.

Thursday, 21.03.2024

School started at 9.00am with a meeting at the computer room for an introduction to the 3D printer. Indeed, for the realisation of the second lamp, students must make a small lamp support with the printer. Later on, students kept on working on their table lamp: sanding the lamp base, then, sanding on the vertical stubs which were cut with the circular saw, the planer and the thickness planer

After making the mortices and the cable grooves, they stuck the vertical stubs into the mortice (tray and base), so as to test the stability. Then the lamp was fixed into the mortice. After finishing all this process, they put the wires and the bulb. At 4.00pm we stopped working and went to the city for leisure time. At 7.00pm, we were all invited to Allegade 10 Restaurant where we had a dinner altogether.

Friday, 22.03.2024

We arrived at 8.00am in order to start with the week evaluation we did on the computer by working with the templat of MS Teams. At 10.00 a.m. we took a bus to go to other buildings of NEXT Uddannelse Taebyvej Kobenhavn, where students presented their final joinery work exam. It was a very good opportunity to meet teachers, students and have a talk with them, and admire amazing projects. At noon, after a lunch break, the week was over and each group left to the airport or station.
